About Us

Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue is affiliated with the Reconstructonist movement and has strong commitments to both tradition and to the search for contemporary meaning. We encourage our members to engage in any facet of prayer, learning, celebrations and life cycle events at our synagogue.

Many of us have spent a lifetime searching for a spirituality we can call our own. Regardless of your journey, you will find Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue a place-a warm, friendly center of Jewish learning and caring-you can finally call your own.

Located on the Malibu coast, MJC&S encompasses a wide variety of backgrounds. Some of us are more observant, some are less, and at MJC&S, we all come together as part of the Jewish people. Our services, while traditional in their essence, are designed to be deeply meaningful and a spiritual joy, no matter what path has brought you to our door.

We have grown and flourished from our founding families to a community of over 250 families sharing similar goals, values and vision, all dedicated to enriching the lives of our families, our community and the world around us. Please take a moment to review these membership materials and please feel welcome to join us to meet our clergy, Rabbi Judith HaLevy, Cantor Marcelo Gindlin and our Director of Education Rabbi Carrie Benveniste.

Religious Services
At MJC&S, we offer a full program of both Friday evening and Saturday morning services that are accessible, understandable, and firmly rooted in the beauty of our ancient tradition. We use the Reconstructionist prayerbook, Kol HaNeshamah, which has been widely praised as the most innovative prayerbook in American Judaism. No matter what your level of Hebrew preparation, you find a place to uplift your soul and share the joys of Shabbat with our Malibu community.

We offer Friday evening Shabbat services, (in the summer we are at the beach), and we meet at 9:30 am on Saturday mornings to discuss the Torah portion of the week. Led by Rabbi Judith, these discussions bring the relevance of Torah as a “tool for personal growth and understanding into our lives. We continue with a full Shabbat service each week. Baby namings, birthdays, healing services and remembrances are all incorporated into our Shabbat services.

Festivals & Holidays
Jewish time is marked by the cycle of festivals and holidays that define our identity as Jews. Each and every holiday is a special cause for celebration at MJC&S. Come join us. Each year, over a thousand people join us as we honor the New Year and the Day of Atonement.

We also offer children services and day care and a complete series of two days of Rosh Hashanah and all day Yom Kippur services. Membership includes High Holy Day tickets, and an opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for those members of your family who do not live under your roof. The majesty of the day is matched by the voice of our Cantor, Marcelo Gindlin, the MJC&S Choir and the amazing classical musicians who join us, and Rabbi Judith HaLevy’s relevant and inspiring services.

Adult Education
Here at MJC&S we take pride in offering a full array of adult education programs. Whether you are a non-Jewish spouse hoping to learn more about our culture and heritage, a Jew longing to remember a culture that you may never have really known, or an avid scholar of Torah and Jewish History with an extensive Jewish background, there is a place for you in our adult education program.

Each class is designed to make Jewish education relevant and applicable to our modern lives, while enhancing our understanding of an ancient tradition. Most of all, MJC&S, under the guidance of Rabbi Judith HaLevy, offers a place for all seekers to reconnect with a spiritual life within a Jewish context, in a manner that is upbeat, current, and accessible to all.
